I think what Doyle was describing as the difference between "descriptive" and
"inferential" research would better be referred to by the good old terms
"deductive" and "inductive." Both of these are perfectly valid in different
circumstances, depending upon your goals; grant agencies seem to prefer
induction, but that does not make it a superior methodology over all-- just a
more lucrative one.
