The swallows have arrived. There were 8 tree, 1 rough-winged and 1 barn on
the ponds Saturday. Also 6 purple martins, which I first saw on 3/10. The
martin house at Lake Shamrock has been active since 3/1. Also on the ponds:
lesser scaup, ring-necked duck, ruddy duck, green-winged teal, blue-winged
teal, hooded merganser, bufflehead, gadwall, n. shoveler, pied-billed grebe,
coot. There was a widgeon on 3/10. This week I've been seeing a kestrel and
a male harrier hunting regularly up there. Some nesting activity at the
Wetlands Center... red-shouldered hawks and phoebes.
