I know the default is easily changed, but I suspect it was made the
default *only* because it was a "new feature" - for twenty+ years SPSS
users had only seen variables in their file order. It's an example of
"change for change's sake", software design being driven by whim rather
than by philosophy or deep thought. SPSS is not the worst offender in
this area :-)
