My (inelegant, but it works, solution)

double clik to activate the table Select the table (or CTRL-A)

Format>>Cell properties Click on Values tab Select All or Number from list on left Select #.# from list on right (top entry) Check the "Adjust format for cell width box" --CRUCIAL, make sure it is Black on White, not grayed out To accept SPSS default decimal places (I almost always do) leave the decimal place spinner blank, or if you prefer to set your own number of decimals, do so.
