These three tools have made life a lot easier for me - I have no
commercial interest in any of these products, just a satisfied user:
Program: UltraEdit
Platform: MS Windows
Homepage: http://www.ultraedit.com
Cost: $30.00 USD
Purpose: UltraEdit is a disk based editor with a 16-Bit version for Windows
3.x and a 32-Bit version for Windows NT and Windows 95/98 (not Win32s). One
of my favorite features is the configurable syntax highlighting. Meets all
my SAS programming and other text editing needs. Built-in FTPclient permits
editing of Mainframe files on PC with all editing features available!
Program: CS-RCS
Platform: MS Windows
Homepage: http://www.componentsoftware.com/csrcs/addons.htm
Cost: free personal license for standalone PCs
Purpose: CS-RCS is a Windows Front-End for RCS, a GNU public license
version control system. It is easy to learn and allows restoration of
previous versions of a file. Also contains a viewer for highlighting changes
between versions.
This is great for tracking versions of programs delivered to clients. Also
works with binary files, e.g. SAS catalogs. Even integrates into UltraEdit's
configurable ("Advanced") Menu.
Program: WindowsCommander
Platform: MS Windows
Homepage: http://www.ghisler.com
Cost: 40 Swiss Francs (approx. US$ 32) including shipping&handling.
Purpose: Windows Commander, Version 3.53, is a Shareware file manager for
Windows® 95/98, Windows NT®, and Windows® 3.1. Features in Windows Commander
3.53 include two file windows side by side, multiple language support. It
contains an internal ZIP/UNZIP which lets you use ZIP-files like
directories, as far as simple file operations (copy, open, drag'ndrop) are
concerned. Made WinZip obsolete for _me_ (Hi, Phil :-), but I have not yet
tried the piping stuff).
