NEW JERSEY CHAPTER AMERICAN STATISTICAL ASSOCIATION 20th ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM

The New Jersey Chapter will hold its annual symposium on June 2, 1999 at The Sheraton at Woodbridge Place, Iselin, New Jersey. The theme of the symposium is "Safety Issues and Bayesian Method in Drug Development." There will be two sessions; one session will be on safety issues in clinical trials, and another will be on Bayesian methods in the design and analysis of clinical trials. The speakers on safety issues are Janet Wittes of the Statistics Collaborative, Jay Herson of Applied Logic Associates, and Judith Jones of Degge Group. Donald Berry of Duke Univer- rsity and Joseph Schafer of Pennsylvania State University will speak on Bayesian methods.

In clinical trial, safety is one of the most important aspects. Statisticians and their colleagues have to consider safety thoroughly and carefully at each stage of a trial. Many challenge issues occur in planning, monitoring, and reporting of trials. Recently, Bayesian reasoning is gaining more interest of biostatisticians. Advances in modern sampling computation methods in the last decade has made the Bayesian framework an attractive alterna- tive for a variety of problems encountered in clinical trials. It also has made analysis of incomplete data possible in more complex settings. The symposium brings together these experts to discuss various safety issues and recent trends in appli- cations of Bayesian methods in the design, monitoring, and reporting of clinical trials.

Registration form will be mailed in May 1999. The registration fee is $50.00 if paid by 5/17/99, and $70.00 if paid after 5/17/99. Students are free if registered by 5/17/99. Detailed information and registration form can be obtained from
