I read the following two books by J. Scott Long to get started. They don't include the most current developments, but they are well written and read together they give a good introduction to the subject including a good discussion of similarities and differences between SEM's and exploratory factoranalysis:
Long, J. Scott (1983). "Confirmatory Factor Analysis", Newbury Park: Sage Publications
Long, J. Scott (1983). "Covariance Structure Models: an introduction to LISREL",
Newbury Park: Sage Publications
While not exactly basic the following seems to be the standard-textbook on these models:
Bollen, Kenneth (1989). "Structural Equations with Latent Variables", New York: Wiley
