Subject: Re: Three Nuthatch Site
I have lots of golden-crowned kinglets in the water oaks in my yard in
Northwest Atlanta. Occasionally (not recently) I see large flocks of gulls
circling (in the manner of vultures) very high overhead. I assume it has
something to do with a couple of landfills on the banks of the
Chattahoochee about a mile away. They're too high up for me to see what
kind of gulls they are. Anyone seen the same? By the way, Bob Manns had
emergency disc surgery on his neck up in Maine. Anyone wishing him a speedy
recovery can contact him through didimanns@hotmail.com .

Subject: [GABO-L] Three Nuthatch Site
Hello GABbers,
Yesterday while birding in Hall County, I saw all three GA nuthatch
species at one site - and while standing in one spot! This was at
Simpson Park on Lake Lanier west of Gainesville off (to the south) SR
53. This very small park is composed of a boat ramp and small picnic
area in dense short needle pines. Many Brown-headeds, one Red-breasted
and several White-breasted Nuthatches plus a Brown Creeper, Pine
Warblers and the usual chicadees and titmice responded to my screech owl
tape.
I birded six of the parks on Lake Lanier in the vicinity of SR 53. The
most productive were Simpson Park and Sardis Park (to the north of SR
53) where I saw Hermit Thrush; Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets;
Brown-headed Nuthatches; Chipping, Song, White-throated and Field
Sparrows; Yellow-bellied Sapsucker; Red-bellied Woodpecker; Brown
Thrasher, cardinals, goldfinches, chicadees, and titmice.
Although I spent a lot of time along Lake Lanier where water, water was
everywhere - there were no waterfowl to see, except, of course, Canada
Geese in a few places and a few Mallards with one group.
A surprise to me, but probably not to other GA birders, were the
Ring-billed Gulls flying around the super market parking lots in
Gainesville.
Best Wishes,
Dot Freeman, Blairsville
