Readers interested in this subject might have a look at the MatLab mapping
toolbox Users' Guide - map_ug.pdf - available through the Mathworks website:

http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/toolbox/map/map.shtml

That link allows web access to the Guide.

If you wish to download the Guide the web page links through this line on
that page:

"A printable version of the Mapping Toolbox documentation (58,427k) is
available in PDF format."

Doing the browser download fetches the Guide into your workstation.

About 70 projections in all, plus lots of general mapping info, references
and explanations.

Each projection has a one-page writeup, a map of the world in that
projection, and a global map of circles showing distortions of the projection.
