Subject: Processing the Forest Service Maps
Sender: "Diaz, Carlos" <[log in to unmask]>

I recently received a shipment of USGS/Forest Service maps. Of course, the
USGS maps come with shipping lists but not with any call numbers attached to
them.

So, I proceeded to consult the GPO CLASSIFICATION MANUAL, 1993 edition.
Then I proceeded to read the instructions on how to process the Forest
Service maps.....well, it turns out that those instructions are kind of out
dated...so, I sent an email to Vi Moorhouse who is GPO's Maps guru.

She responded with a fax sent to me and I thought I would share it with you
since it was fairly new to me.

"Dear Carlos: We did not send you a copy of the 1993 manual
because much of the information is now out of date. You must
have looked at the instructions for the former large forest sets.
These sets are now issued simultaneously by the Geological
Survey and the Forest Service in a single edition as Topographic
quadrangles/large Forest sets. This was done to save money
for the Forest Service and to make money for the Geological
Survey; thus benefiting both agencies. Another method of
saving money was to stop printing all the map designations
at the foot of each quadrangle or forest set. Many of the new
forest quadrangle sets cover more than one or even two forests
and the quadrangle information was not used by the Forest
         Service.

We felt it would it would be of more use to you to see these
quadrangles already classed and cataloged in OCLC and in
the Monthly Catalog. Many have now been done. All done
are searchable under the four, four author, title search for the
forest and also for the individual quadrangle maps.

The class now has the quadrangle stem--I 19.81: (followed by the
CT for the first received or chief forest) (followed by year of
information) (followed by the quadrangle key nos. arranged on
pg.90 of the manual. Search gn:I1981/(year) in OCLC and you
will find listings of these forest sets grouped at the end of the
quadrangle lists. Year, of course, in OCLC's method of listing
would be by date printed. [For example: search under
         gn:I1981/1998 or under Geol,Moun]

Hope all this is a help to you. Happy to have your questions
         come to us.

                                Vi Moorhouse"

Thanks Vi for your very informative fax. It really helped me figure out how
to proceed. If this info. could be placed on the FDLP website, that would
be great.

I had better results finding the maps via the four, four author/title search
in OCLC.

Again, Thanks for your invaluable help.
