Jim,

The "figure 8" on globes is called an analemma.  It is a graphical
representation of the amount of time one would add or subtract from the
mean solar time (24 hours) in order to get the true time it will take for
the Earth to rotate 360 degrees on its axis for that particular day of the
year.   You may also find a simular definition in any good dictionary.
