Since the atlas says it's copyrighted by Rand McNally, and rules for map
cataloging (which is what cataloging of atlases falls under) are not as
stringent in determining a corporate main entry as the general rules on this
are, I would give Rand McNally as the main entry on this title. I think it's
safe to say that the cartographic responsibility for this item rests with
Rand McNally.

As to publisher, I'd lean to crediting Rand McNally. I think of State Farm
as the issuing body. As a serials cataloger, the idea of an issuing body
being different from a publisher is one I see often. In serials, an academic
society will contract with a commercial publisher to put out its journal,
but the work will say it is the "Journal of Such and Such Association." In
essence, State Farm has contracted with Rand McNally to produce the atlas,
but put the State Farm name on the work. We give added entries to issuing
bodies in serials, so I'd give an added entry to State Farm.

Hello all,
I'm cataloging a title, State Farm Road Atlas: U.S., Canada, Mexico;
copyright 2002 by Rand McNally. The issues are what shd be described as the
main entry, and also the publisher. The same paragraph that has the
copyright info. also has Rand M's address and website address. I found no
other mention of Rand M. in the atlas. The State Farm Insurance co. logo is
on every page as far as I can see; plus the first page has a form letter
from State Farm Insurance cos. (U.S. and Canadian offices) to the customer.
I suspect that Rand McNally produced the atlas and State Farm is both
distrbuting the atlas & using it as an advertising platform. BTW, the oclc
records I've seen for other editions/similar cases just have title main
entry with 710s for both State Farm and Rand McNally, but I wonder about the
quality of these records. In my case, it seems better to do a title main
entry and describe State Farm as the publisher/distributor. Your feedback
is welcome.

Thanks.
