Subject: historic gazetteers

Your email request regarding "historic gazetteers" was forwarded to the Geographic Names Offcie at the US Geological Survey. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the nation's official geographic names repository, contains references to historical entities (features that no longer exist). To retrieve such entires, type %historic% (% is the wildcard symbol) in the feature name box, and select a particular State (a State must be selected). One may also refine the search by selecting type of feature. The address is <http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis>. Please let us know if you have questions.
