Dear Chris, I believe that the use of the 'cartographic materials' for
the GMD is quite recent, and it may be that the records you are seeing
at the LC and other libraries were done before the recent change from
'maps' to 'cartographic materials'.  Looking in Bibliographic Formats
Ed. 2 - there are no periods used when there is only a 245 subfield a
and the GMD.  The examples on pg. 2:23 are:  The Crusades 1
#h[microform]     and  Yoga for health #h[microform]      and  Medical
teaching philosophies #h[videorecording]    No periods are used in
these three examples.
