This question opened as a cataloging question but really applies to users. What would be helpful when trying to find maps showing building footprints?

Pretty much agreeing with Nancy's comments: Seems to me that including the word "buildings" in a 500 Shows ... note might be sufficient. Not sure if it's necessary to specifically mention building tops (I've seen a few -- they frequently appear as if an X were drawn on the building footprint).

Good idea to also include these two:
650 0 Buildings $z (Country, State) $z (City) $v Maps.
651 0 (Place) $x Buildings, structures, etc. $v Maps.

Another question: Do mapfolk think it's a good idea to routinely include these 65x headings in records for fire insurance maps? I have not done so in the past, and have found very few catalog records having a heading to reflect buildings.

Hi Angie --

I want to wish you belated congratulations on becoming Maps-L moderator.
You've been doing a great job, and you were so brave to take on the load,
along with cataloging responsibilties that never abate! Brave, also, to
follow in Johnnie's footsteps.

About your cataloging question, over the years, I haven't noticed a regular
note in map records to indicate when building top and foot prints are
shown. (I don't know if I've ever seen a map with building top prints.)
But it might be a good idea to introduce and use such a note. I think I
have tended to use a vague and not very informative phrase, like "Shows
buildings" on the maps that show buildings that might not be expected to --
where there's no hint of it in the title, or it's not from a publisher
where it's expected, like Sanborn. But maybe it would even be worthwhile
to mention it in cases like Sanborn, for the uninitiated, just like we say
"Relief shown by contours" on USGS maps. A related question, what subject
headings/subheadings do you use? Buildings, structures, etc.? Real
property? Others?

Another sort of related question I have is about views versus maps. It
seems that there are some maps that have view-like qualities -- that show
the streets like a map, and have no horizon, but show buildings like a
view. I end up in a quandary about whether or not to use the 007 $b y and
300 $a 1 view. And if I don't use those, I still want to include a note
something like "Birds-eye view" or "Buildings shown pictorially," as well
as use both 651 subdivisions $v Maps and $v Aerial views. Have you come up
against that situation, and do you have a system for dealing with it?

With best wishes to you and all the folks at AGS,
Nancy

Angie,

In my experience and practice I know I don't routinely mention in a note
that building footprints and/or tops are shown, but when I do it is
usually done as part of a longer "Includes...." 500 note. In
some exceptional cases I might create a separate 500 note just
specifically to indicate the presence of these footprints/tops.

Angie,

I would add a simple note along the lines of, "Shows building outlines." or
"Shows building footprints." etc.

This would be a note about content, so would be right up there near any note
about relief, etc.

This is a question for catalogers - well ...and anyone who wants to
venture there ...

A lot of our patrons want data and maps with building prints (foot and
top) on them.

Is there an "acceptable" practice for adding notes for maps regarding
buidling top and footprints? I'm just wondering what other cataloger do
if anything.

Thanks.

Angie
