Subject: Google Scholar and Maps

scholar.google.com maintains a page "support for libraries"
<http://scholar.google.com/scholar/libraries.html#start2>. On that page
is an email address ([log in to unmask]), re: libraries linking
to the system, with the implication that the library has to join the
OCLC's open WorldCat. I assume one could start inquiries there, if you
haven't already. With respect to specific sites pertaining to map images
(Rumsey, LOC, etc.), it looks like there may be some other options. I
would assume linking to bibliographic data would be simpler than the
image files.

As to cartographic material, one can find pertinent books, and some
articles (_Imago Mundi_ articles do show there, at least some of them,
based on a quick evaluation). A surprising amount of full-text
capability is present, and if the "Library Search" link appears within
the query, that does lead one back to what seems to be a WordCat search
capability (open). I wasn't able to come up with digital map imagery,
but did not spend long. With the right contacts, since the motivations
seem to fit within their intellectual schemes, I would hope that more
cartographic material could be included. I haven't a clue how they are
handling open-source journals, or if they've even thought it out, but
others on this list may have had more direct contact concerning these
issues.
