We have approximately 500 rolled wall maps, most of them given to us by
the Geography Department when they transferred their map collection to us.
They are occasionally used by faculty for teaching. They get little use
outside of that. We do not purchase new wall maps. For the most part, the
maps are stored on end in compartmented boxes. The longer maps (too
tall to stand on end) are hung on the wall using gun racks.

In the past we have removed some of the older maps from the rollers,
sectioned them, and encapsulated them. This was done as a way of
preserving ones that were damaged or suffering damage from rolling and
unrolling. We don't have the budget to do full blown preservation on
some of our older wall maps that have historical significance, so this
seemed to be a good compromise.

All this discussion has made me think about the amount of space taken up
by our collection and the little use that it has. Perhaps it's time to
assess what our real needs are for rolled wall maps. However, I hate to
get rid of maps unless I have to. Do people have any opinions about
removing non-rare or fragile wall maps from rollers and sectioning them? Is this sacralidge?
