The most comprehensive site representing all issues related to 'map thefts'
is the following. "Maphist" has been a listserve that has discussed map
thefts many time over the years. Since the Bill Bland affair, "Island of
Lost Maps" and, most recently, the Forbes Smiley, Jr. III exploits, the
academic discussions have addressed 'how were the maps taken;' 'how do we
get them back;' and, 'how do we prevent future thefts':

Western Washington University is to be commended for taking the initiative
to make known their loss. Additionally, they are acting quickly and with
specificity of detail. If the antiquarian community is to be of help, this
is exactly what we need. We receive visits and inquiring telephone calls
about the value of such items and are urged to buy. It is the rare exception
that the person appears to fit "the look of a thief." Thus, with out timely
and quality information we can't evaluate the material any more deeply. We
are also very watchful of material offered on ebay, other auctions and trade
shows.

I will place a notice of this specific theft on my website section dealing
with map thefts. This helps me deter those from offering stolen material,
but, also helps to spread the word. Again, act QUICKLY and provide as much
detail as possible. www.carto.com

> It's been a bad day. One of my staff came in this morning and discovered
that over a dozen old government publications had been vandalized:
illustrations razored out. We're talking stuff that could be sold at
antiquarian bookstores or the like.
