Angie,

As a former draftsman, vellum is what I have always known it as. Vellum
used to be made from calfskin (or another kind of skin), but now it is
just paper. It is an opaque paper that you can see through for tracing.
In the old days of paper and pencil drafting, you would use vellum
because you only had to draw the floor plan (as an example) once and
then you would just trace that for the other specialized sheets. Pencil
marks also erase very easily. I have seen them in maps also when you
have many layers to overlay. If this is not an overlay, then I would
say may be an original and not printed. Vellum is a lot more expensive
than regular paper and it is not as pliable so it tears easily. Thus
the "master" copies were vellum and the "working" copies were on regular
paper.

Just my 2 cents.

Subject: MAPS-L: Draftsman's vellum from 1901 - what to call in MARC

Hi All,

If someone could save me the research time ... I have a map from 1901
that is printed on what we think is 'draftsman's vellum.' Is there a
correct term for this type of material - a correct term that would go in
the 300 field or in a 500 note of the catalog record?? The material is
sort of like a plastic treated kind of cloth - not paper - or is it ...

Muchas gracias!

Angie
