Position Description:  Life Sciences Librarian

Miami University Libraries, Oxford, OH has an opening for an Assistant
Librarian to fill the Life Sciences Librarian position in the Brill
Science Library.  We are seeking an innovative, self-motivated, service
oriented and flexible team player with a can-do attitude. This position
reports to the Coordinating Head of Special Libraries/Interim Assistant
Dean.

The Life Sciences Librarian serves as liaison to the Botany,
Microbiology and Zoology Departments in the College of Arts and
Sciences.  All three departments are nationally recognized and offer
degrees through the PhD level.  The successful candidate will have an
interest in and ability to effectively provide an array of services and
support including reference, collection development, and library
instruction: will embrace an environment of continuous improvement: and
will be comfortable with change and with working in an organization that
seeks to stay close to the edge of technology.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Providing general and specialized reference and research services;
collection development, instruction and liaison activities in the life
sciences and other subject areas as assigned by:
Serving as a consultant to the chair of Miami's IACUC (institutional
animal care and use committee)
Maintaining an active instruction program
Providing reference services to students and faculty, in particular the
Life Sciences programs both in-house and electronically
Developing the libraries collection of materials in the assigned subject
areas, including medicine and the allied health sciences
Maintaining the Research by Subjects and Research by Class online
sections of the Libraries website for the assigned subject areas
Utilizing technologies appropriate for daily work tasks and special projects

Requirements include:

A graduate library degree from an ALA accredited institution
A strong background in the life sciences (either an undergraduate
degree, second masters or significant experience)
A strong customer service orientation and commitment
The ability to work in both traditional and virtual environments
Demonstrated success at working collaboratively with all levels of staff
and users
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to plan and implement creative and effective new
user services
Significant experience with information and document delivery systems
Successful teaching experience
Ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment and foster
that ability in others
Comfortable with technology and open to learning new applications.
Initiative and ability to conceive and carry out projects
Some weekend and evening hours may be required
Ability to meet the Libraries requirements for promotion and continuing
contract

Benefits include Blue Cross/Blue Shield, major medical, dental and term
life insurance.  Ohio Public Employees Retirement System or alternate
Retirement Program (ARP).  Salary negotiable depending upon experience
and qualifications.
