Dear Taris Ahmad (and MAPS-L),

I'm sorry you've had to go to USA, via Australia, on a 'modern' maps &
GIS discussion list to look for 'old' maps of the Arabian Peninsula!

Apart for the History of Cartography gateway site (includes a section on
web images) [<http://www.maphistory.info/>] you should start with the
following hard copy reading matter -

The history of cartography / edited by J. Brian Harley & David Woodward;
Vol.2, Book 1: cartography in the traditional Islamic and south Asian
societies / associate editors: Joseph E. Schwartzberg, Gerald R.
Tibbetts; assistant editor: Ahmet T. Karamustafa. - Chicago ; London :
University of Chicago Press, 1992. - xxiv,579p., 40p. of col. plates :
ill., maps ; 29 cm. - Bibliogr. ind.: p.521-545. - ISBN 0-226-31635-1

Doubtless you will realise that the 2nd-century (CE) Ptolemaic tradition
of geography and mapping will be mentioned within the context of this
specific volume; and you could also refer, perhaps, to the Islamic
manuscript recensions of Ptolemy's 'Geography' leading to those of the
15th century in MS and then in printed editions.

Yours sincerely
(Mr) Francis Herbert (Curator of Maps)

A colleague made the following request on another list. Can anyone help?
Please email
him directly.

"I am looking for maps from the 6th to the 7th century of the Arabian
Peninsula. Any
idea whether such maps are available?

Thank you.

Taris Ahmad < >"
