Dear Carol
Five years ago, following extensions to our stack area we moved over 700
horizontal map cases which we stack three high. Most of our stacks are
also on compactus.
I would not recommend moving cabinets with drawers and contents intact.
They will be extremely heavy, so there are OH&S issues, plus potential
damage to both the contents and the cabinets themselves. We had a team
of four men used to moving collections and they removed the drawers from
around three to four cabinets at a time, stacked the drawers in sequence
on pallets, placed the cabinets to where they were going, then
reinstalled the drawers. We had no accidents, misfiles or damage.
We had also drawn up a plan prior to the move as to where cabinets were
to go so the classified sequence of the collection also remained intact,
plus built in some expansion along the way as well. The whole exercise
took around 2-3 weeks.
Yours sincerely

Subject: Question: Moving Map Cases

Hi all,

Quite a few years ago I think I remember seeing some advice about
moving map cases. Of course, now that we are about to move, I can't
find these pieces of wisdom. I vaguely remember someone'e advice
being that the drawers themselves should be emptied, the drawers
should be removed from the cases, and that everything be put
back exactly as it was. Any advice from those who have moved? Is
emptying the drawers necessary?

FYI, We stack our flat map cases 3 5-drawer units high, most of
them measure about 54x42, we have 31 of this type of case, and most
of our drawers are VERY full.

any insight into this process will be greatly appreciated!

thanks, Carol
