Access, Preservation, and Interchange: Digital Imaging with JPEG 2000

June 25, 2005, 8:30 - noon. Chicago, IL (Hotel Intercontinental room:
Empire Ballroom)

The newly-formed j2k Interest Group <http://j2kArcLib.info/j2kIG/>
within the Library and Information Technology Association
<http://www.lita.org/> of the American Library Association
<http://www.ala.org/> will be conducting a program at the 2005 Annual
Conference <http://www.ala.org/annual/> with the title "Access,
Preservation, and Interchange: Digital Imaging with JPEG 2000". Through
this program, attendees will:

    * Understand the goals of this new imaging standard, the effect of
those goals on other segments of society, and the impact the
standard can have on digital imagery in libraries
    * Learn about the technology underpinnings of JPEG 2000 (e.g.,
wavelet compression offering better efficiency and bitwise
lossless compression, decoding with different output resolutions,
      progressive delivery, ROI <http://j2kArcLib.info/glossary#term53>
      encoding, flexible file format)
    * Contribute to a process for bringing JPEG 2000 into common
      practice in libraries and archives

    Program Overview

    * What is JPEG 2000? Where/Who did it come from? ("Why should I
care?") A tutorial conducted by Robert Buckley, Research Fellow at
Xerox Corporation and member of the JPEG 2000 Committee (ISO
      <http://j2kArcLib.info/glossary#term54>/ITU
      <http://j2kArcLib.info/glossary#term56> JTC 1
      <http://j2kArcLib.info/glossary#term57>/SC 29
      <http://j2kArcLib.info/glossary#term58>), describing the standard
and its impact on libraries and archives.
    * Demonstrations/Discussions of JPEG 2000 for Access, for
Interchange, and for Preservation. Presentations by leading
vendors providing tools and services that make use of JPEG 2000
      technology
    * Panel of JPEG 2000 Practitioners. .
    * Report on the State of Adoption. Building on the work of the
Symposium on the Adoption of JPEG 2000 in Libraries and Archives
<http://j2kArcLib.info/symposium/report/>, a review of how the
standard has been applied in our field, work currently underway,
and an outline of future research and activities.
    * Post-presentation business meeting: Organizing the JPEG 2000
community within libraries. What is desired from an image
compression scheme? What ancillary services, such as metadata
boxes, are important to our field?
