Date: Wed, 22 Jun 2005
From: "John Kawula" <[log in to unmask]>

Cross-posted to increase readership:

Yesterday I mailed the Western Association of Map Libraries (WAML) members
the registration packet for their September conference to be held in
Fairbanks and Denali National Park.

I have attached the same to this e-mail. MODERATOR ELIMINATED ATTACHMENT AND COPIED AND PASTED TEXT BELOW.

Due to contract requirements with the train and Denali area hotel,
registration forms need to be returned to me by Friday July 22.

There is still room on the program for one or two additional speakers.
However they should be prepared to present at the Murie Science and
Learning Center inside Denali National Park. Please contact me if you are
interested.

IMPORTANT: Registration needs to be in my possession Friday July 22 as the train and Denali hotel require full payment and list of names this far in advance.

· Conference dates: Thursday September 8 - Sunday September 11.

· The conference will be split between Fairbanks and Denali National Park. You should plan on arriving in Fairbanks Wednesday September 7. One of the most popular flights leaves Fairbanks nonstop for Seattle about 2 AM. Therefore you could save one hotel night by taking that flight at the end of the conference.

LOGISTICS

Because of contract requirements with the Denali hotel and train, we will need to make these reservations and you will have to pay WAML for this portion. You will need to make and pay for the Fairbanks hotel reservation yourself.

IMPORTANT DETAILS

· Alaska Airlines is allowing a 10% discount on the lowest available fare at the time of booking. The travel dates allowed are from September 5-14. Travelers will need to call the Alaska Airlines Group Desk (1-800-445-4435 Monday - Friday 6:00AM - 6:00PM or Saturday 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM PST) and give the Code CMR8026. The code is not given out at the desk.

· The designated Fairbanks hotel is Pike's Waterfront Lodge, 1850 Hoselton Drive, Fairbanks 99709. You will need to make your own reservation and pay for it yourself. They are holding a block of rooms for the nights of September 7, 8, and 11 at a conference discount of $75 per night plus tax. There may not be a conference code assigned, so identify yourself as associated with WAML.

· Pike's contact info: http://www.pikeslodge.com
Phone: 1-877-774-2400 or 1-907-456-4500
FAX: 907-456-4515

· Our designated hotel in the Denali area is the Denali Bluffs Hotel. http://www.denalialaska.com/bluffs_index.html WAML registration includes this reservation.

· Denali Park has a website. http://www.nps.gov/dena This includes bus schedules and reservation instructions for the Saturday visitation into the park.

· To make the Saturday experience easy to manage this is my recommendation:

o First, the whole thing is optional. If you want to concentrate on the fore country near the visitor center, or the first 15 miles of the road, there are free shuttles.

o Second, booking a custom tour would be expensive and from what I can tell disappointing especially when you consider the cost. Therefore I recommend that people book themselves on any one of eight shuttle buses that depart from the Visitor's Center. Booking as a group would be too complex. Furthermore having people book themselves gives them more choices.

o For those familiar with the park, Eielson Visitor Center, deep into the park is closed this year due to renovation. The substitute turn around point is called Fish Creek about 63 miles into the park and about 7 miles short of Eielson. I recommend this as the destination for the WAML group. Buses leave the Main Visitor Center for Fish Creek on Saturday September 10 at the following times: 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 11:00, and 12:30. Ticket price $33.75 (includes $10 park entrance fee). You can also change your reservation for a small fee. Unless the park is really crowded that day, you should be able to make last minute changes.

o Reservations can be made from their website, mail or FAX (the website gives instructions) or by phone 1-800-622-7275 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Alaska time zone. I prefer the phone as that way alternatives can be discussed. Remember the system I am describing is called the park shuttle (or shuttle bus) system. They have a tour system that takes you to prearranged places - but I think most people will prefer the shuttle system.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

· To get the group discount for the train we must come and go at the same time.

· The Large Animal Research Station tour will leave the hotel about 4:45. This should give those coming in on the 3:24 arrival from Seattle enough time to make connections. However, flights can be late so be careful about your flight times if you want to take this tour.

· The Thursday dinner is a choice of Alaska salmon, Alaska halibut, chicken, or prime rib. Included are: salad, bread, vegetable, potatoes, non-alcoholic beverage and dessert. Gratuity is included. You do not have to specify your choice in advance. According to the poll I took earlier, it was not deemed necessary to have a strict vegetation choice. I think they might permit a few exceptions. Contact me if you want such an option.

· Lunches are the usual deli type spreads. Everything else was way too expensive.

CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO DO

_____ Decide on your arrival time and make flight reservations.

_____ Fill out WAML reservation form and send check. (Must be received
                by July 22nd).

_____ If desired, make reservations for the Denali National Park shuttle bus
