I looked in the "North Carolina Gazeteer" (William Powell).  It does
give place name
origins for some entries, but not all.  There were several entries for
Big Butt, Big Butte,
Big Butt Mountain and Big Butte Mountain, but no mention of the place
name origin
for any of these.
