Hi All,

The AGS Library is one of North America’s foremost
geography and map collections. Formerly the library and map collection of the American Geographical Society (AGS) of New York, it was
transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries in 1978
following a nationwide selection process.  The AGS Library presently consists of over one million items, and includes maps, atlases, books, journals, pamphlets, photographs, slides, landsat images, and digital spatial data. The scope of the collection is worldwide.

The AGS Library digital spatial data clearing house actively collects and archives digital data.  Data is made available to users in a variety of formats including digital base maps at various scales; attribute data on spatially referenced population characteristics, hydrologic units, geology, etc.; and raster images which include synoptic world views, satellite images of various places, orthophoto images and scanned maps.

Digital Spatial Data/Digital Collections Librarian
Associate Academic Librarian – Position #6506

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Curator of the American Geographical Society Library, provides direct, general, and specialized reference service to digital spatial data collections; oversees collection development, cataloging, archiving and maintaining of digital spatial data clearinghouse materials; oversees the technical aspects of developing and maintaining digital collections within the AGSL or using AGSL materials; and works with Libraries Automation department to keep in operational order all computer and peripheral equipment related to the digital spatial data clearinghouse and digital collections.  Also responsible for providing backup general reference services in the AGS Library.

Qualifications:
Required:  MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution; a degree in geography, cartography or related field; experience with geographic information systems and digital spatial data; experience with database and web design; proven analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work well independently and with others; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
Desired:  Advanced degree in geography, cartography or related discipline; experience with photographic archives; and experience working in an academic or research library.

Terms of Appointment:
This is a full-time probationary academic staff appointment, annual (12-month basis). Salary range 4, $37719A minimum, commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Excellent fringe benefits included.
