Subject: world thematic mapping programmes?

Apart from Arcmap, does anyone know of any simple to learn software
that would allow me to rapidly make thematic world maps, say by
entering numeric data next to a list of countries, and the programme
shades the countries according to the data values?
For example, if I have a list of population densities for each
country and want a 5-colour thematic map to display them visually?

Perhaps there is a simple software or website online?

As this is for analysis rather than final presentation purposes a
this point, I don't want to burden our cartographer with creating a
dozen or more maps, but want something I can play with myself.

Also:
Does anyone know of software that given a world map and data for each
country will create a distorted world map with the country areas in
proportion to the data (such as the population maps one sometimes
sees done in this way)?

Thanks
