Interesting...I've always received the BLM Surface Management Status maps folded. I receive them via the FDLP.
I didn't know they ccould be sent flat. For us, though, folded is fine because it saves on space.

Yes indeed, they are tightly creased by those efficient folding
machines. They are also coming to us with Marcive records, in SuDoc form
- unheard of before. I have to convert them to LC.

Ironically, just yesterday I had a student come in seeking a flat BLM
sheet of a 1:100,000 map in WY, because her personal copy was folded,
and she wanted to do a distortion-free scan of it for GIS purposes.
Problem was, our newly-sent edition was folded also. 'Uh, sorry ...!'

Tragically, our 'steam-powered' flattening device to iron out wrinkles
and creases on paper was retired some time ago.

May I be so bold as to assume that these quirks are due to other
agencies or private concerns handling the routing of these materials to
Depository Libraries? Outsourcing? (Nah! Couldn't be...)

We've been unfolding and interfiling with the flat maps. -- Gwen

Hello,
I'm noticing that the 1:100,000 Topo maps are now coming folded. Just
curious. Are others leaving them this way or unfolding them to lay
flat
with the others?
