THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 11 million volumes housed in
the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental libraries.
It employs a dynamic, diverse and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who
have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general direction of the History and Social Sciences
Cataloging Team Leader, provides original cataloging for a wide range of
print and non-print materials in both English and Western European
languages for libraries in the Yale system. Fifty percent of the
position time will be devoted to cataloging modern and rare maps and
other cartographic materials from the Library's Map Collection.
Descriptive cataloging is performed in accordance with national
standards and the requirements of Yale's local on-line Voyager system.
Other responsibilities include keeping abreast of revisions in
cataloging rules and trends; may train and revise the work of other
librarians; train, revise and resolve cataloging problems for C&T staff.

Participates actively in the Library's management, assessment, training,
and development programs; contributes to implementing the mission of the
Library; and is active professionally.

QUALIFICATIONS
Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited library science program. Strong
reading knowledge of one or more European languages. Subject background
in History, Geography or the Social Sciences. Sound knowledge of AACR2,
Library of Congress rule interpretations, Library of Congress subject
analysis, the Library of Congress Map Cataloging Manual, and MARC
formats for books and maps. Working familiarity with OCLC and/or RLIN.
Experience cataloging in an integrated library system, particularly
Endeavor’s Voyager is preferred. Experience with maps, both modern and
rare, is also preferred. Knowledge of current trends and best practices
in cataloging and metadata services.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent oral and written
communication skills. Proficient computer skills, including experience
with personal computer hardware and software as needed to perform
library functions. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and
attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and
with others in a rapidly changing and demanding environment.
Appointment at Librarian II level requires a minimum of two years
professional library experience in cataloging and professional
accomplishments; appointment at Librarian III level requires a minimum
of five years relevant professional library experience in areas of
cataloging and processing cartographic material as well as professional
accomplishments.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful
candidate's qualifications and experience (min:46,700 for LI). Full
