Forwarded on behalf of Francis Harvey…

UCGIS has endorsed an Amicus Brief filed in California involving
questions of geographic information access. The Santa Clara Superior
Court agreed with arguments presented by the California First Amendment
Coalition that Santa Clara county should charge minimal cost, impose no
restrictions in access to its geographic information "basemap". Prior
to the suit the Santa Clara county charged over $100,000 for its public
data. The county has since lodged an appeal which will be heard by the
state Appeals Court. The amicus brief will be considered in the appeal.
Further details are available at the following web site:
http://www.cfac.org/content/litigation/santaclara.php#LD. The Amicus
Brief is available at: ftp://joffes.com/Amicus%20Brief%20final-8.pdf.
