Subject: Historical landuse map or data (USA)

I have a Ph.D. Student who is looking for any sources of US historical landuse maps or data going back to colonial times, if possible. A person is trying to measure inequality in the distribution of farms/agricultural land in the United States.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Wangyal
