Anybody have an estimate on how much it might cost to ship one of these
(or 10) from, say, Duke U. to Salt Lake City?

Dear Map Librarians,

The map collection at Duke is moving into renovated space. There are
entirely new map cases for the collection. The old plan files are being
removed and are available for "free" under the following conditions:

(1) to a library
(2) that can take them almost immediately, and
(3) that will arrange for and pay for the substantial logistics and
moving costs from Durham, North Carolina.

***Quick reaction is essential.****
We can set aside some here in the building for month or two. The ones
we don't set aside ... once they leave the building, there's no gurantee
how much warehouse space Duke has for them -- and how long they'll hold
on to them if they even do hold on to them. Duke no longer has a
routine surplus or auction procedure like a state institution would
have, and the price of scrap steel is high. :-(

***We can't just hold them aside for a place that "might" want them.
You have to be committed to arranging for pick-up.

About 2/3 of the cases/bases/caps being removed are in the Mayline 7769
or Hamilton 7J series dating from the 1940's to the 2000's. Some of
these have drawer bearings that will need to be repacked with grease or
vaseline or get replacement screws. There are 13 slightly smaller and
fairly new ones in the Hamilton 2J series. The remaining ones are a
mostly variety of hand-me-downs and odd sizes and manufacturers, in
various conditions. I will send a spreadsheet with details to anyone
interested.

Thanks,
        Mark
