This topic is being discussed on multiple lists and I find Robert
Lopresti's questions below compelling. Forwarded from GovDocs-L

Vicki -

Thanks for the kind words. We're mostly just glad the waiting is over.
By the way, if anyone wants to see my own version of the story (aimed at
the general public) you can find it at http://criminalbrief.com/?p=696

The questions that I think we librarians should be asking ourselves
include:

1. Has this happened in my library? (Have you checked your own Serial
Set volumes lately?)
2. If so, how can I get the word out? (One person to contact is FBI
agent James Wilson, who is handling the Brubaker case.

3. If not, how can I make sure it doesn't happen? (Time for a security
audit?)

And finally, the big one that should have all of us putting on our
thinking caps:

4. What should happen to the approximately 20,000 maps and other prints
that were confiscated in Montana and have no identifying markings? (I'd
love to hear your ideas.)

Subject: Map Thief caught thanks to Gov Doc Librarian

Congrats to Robert Lopresti, Western Washington University Government
Information Librarian, in his efforts to catch a map thief. As reported
in
the latest American Libaries Direct (4/2/08) the thief was caught
because of
Rob's diligence and willingness to get involved. I now feel safe to
catalog
our copy of "Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and
Confederate Armies" [Serial Set no. 2998, pub. 1891].
