Subject: MARBI items of interest to cartographic community

Well, ALA Midwinter is fast approaching and there is one proposal
specifically of interest to the cartographic community. Proposal no.
2010-05 supports adding subfield 3 (Materials specified) to field 034 in
the MARC21 Bibliographic and Authority formats. This will permit the
cataloger to indicate which portion of a geographic location is
reflected in the record if the entire area isn't included.

There are some other proposals and discussion papers on the agenda.
Another one that may be of interest is Proposal no. 2010-01 which would
replace code "s" for electronic obsolete in 008/23 and 008/29 (Form of
item) and introduces two new codes, one for direct access files (CD-ROM,
DVD, flash drive) and one for online.

Proposal no. 2010-02 would add a subfield 5 (Institution to which field
applies) in the 80X-830 series added entry fields of the MARC21
Bibliographic Format. There's a couple that deal with FRBR/RDA issues.

The agenda is posted at http://www.loc.gov/marc/marbi/mw2010_age.html
and you can get to the proposals and discussion papers from there if
you're interested.
