I recall reading in a previous discussion a reference to a short article
about how the captured Nazi maps came to be distributed to U.S.
libraries.  I think many were captured by the U.S. army and given to the
Library of Congress, which handed out duplicates to many academic
libraries.  There may be something in an old issue of the LC Information
Bulletin--I would check with someone at the Library of Congress.

I turned up via Google an interesting article by R. Lee Hadden of the
USGS on the "Heringen Colection" at the USGS

bibliography.  Definitely worth reading if you are interested in the
