the second annual conference of the
Australian and New Zealand Map Society (ANZMapS).

ANZMapS was formed last year by the amalgamation of the Australian Map
Circle (AMC) and the New Zealand Map Society (NZMS).

*The conference will be opened by the Hon Dr John Bannon AO*, the former
South Australian Premier and a leading Australian historian.

*The session on Thursday 8 April will be opened by Dr Rob Allan*, from
the UK Meteorological Office, who is coordinating an international
effort (ACRE) to capture climate related information from historical
documents. Leading Australian and international cartographers,
historians, and scientists are participating.

Besides its topical relevance, the conference theme acknowledges South
Australia's exceptional contribution to the analysis of climate and its
implications for settlement and development, a history that goes back to
the time of South Australian Surveyor-General, George Woodroffe Goyder.
Dr Peter Hayman from the Waite Research Precinct will analyse "What we
can learn from Goyder's line of Reliable Rainfall in a changing Climate".

*Speakers *will outline the latest mapping and data analysis
technologies; explore the history of climate mapping including the
seminal work of Mr Goyder, and outline the relevance of historical
records for assessing climate variability today.

*Specially organised tours* of some of Adelaide's truly exceptional
collections of rare maps will take place on the morning of 9 April.

The State Library is located on North Terrace, adjacent to the South
Australian Museum of Natural History, the South Australian Art Gallery
and to the campuses of University of Adelaide and University of South
Australia. It is within easy walking distance of the retail and
commercial centre of Adelaide, the beautiful Botanic Gardens and the
National Wine Centre.


The conference will be followed by a Closed Session (meeting of
professional map managers, curators and librarians) Fri 9 April
1.30 $B!> (B4.30pm National & S tate Libraries Association Workshop "Mastering
Maps: Survival tactics for managing map collections". Mastering Maps is
aimed at librarians curators and others working with map collections in
libraries and universities. The Workshop is sponsored by National &
State Libraries Australasia (NSLA), "Reinventing Libraries" project. The
Workshop will share information about challenges and approaches to
acquisition, cataloguing and digitisation. Numbers are limited.
