Dear Matt,

Thank you for your supportive remarks. I think we have much to learn
by sharing projects and learning off one another. The NYPL project,
based on MapWarper has many nice features, some of which are not yet
well supported in Georeferencer, such as easy online cropping of
maps...

However, in answering Jon Jablonski's query, there are a number of
differences which it may be useful to briefly state:

- Both Georeferencer and NYPL Map Rectifier are built on top of
available open-source components such as OpenLayers, GDAL and
MapServer. But they do not directly share any code and are developed
independently at the moment. The development of Georeferencer started
almost three years ago as part of OldMapsOnline project
(http://help.oldmapsonline.org/), before NYPL Map Rectifier was
announced.

- With Georeferencer the participating libraries do not need to
install any software at their servers, they do not need to maintain
the online service in-house and they do not need to submit their
images to other servers. Georeferencer uses existing online map images
on library servers, so it is technically much easier to start to
participate with your own maps that are already online.

- The shared administration of Georeferencer across libraries, allows
for sharing of costs of development and maintenance, and improvements
in functionality are available for all libraries as soon as they are
developed.

- Libraries are receiving the complete georeferencing metadata created
in the system. This is useful, firstly, so they can enrich their
catalogs with numerical coordinates - and populate the MARC21 034
field or the Dublin Core Bounding Box. Secondly, georeferenced maps
can be intuitively searched with an geo-enabled search methods such as
the MapRank Search engine (http://www.mapranksearch.com/).

- Georeferencer has a significantly different internal implementation
- it is designed to be scalable from the beginning and run in the
cloud.
Now we are almost finished with all the important internal components.
We are concentrating on the user interface and the way that the
service is presented to users and what functionality is offered to the
community. A new pretty design of the whole service is on the way :-).

- Georeferencer runs well in all web browsers now and in the future.
We plan to support older browsers as well, such as Internet Explorer,
if possible.

- At present, the officially supported functionality is relatively
limited, but there are plans in place to extend this quite soon. For
example, soon it will be possible to allow cropping of maps to sheet
boundaries, to allow for polynomial as well as affine transformations
via OGC WMS, to overlay georeferenced maps on a Google map, and the
ability to view the results in MapAnalyst. Some of these can be viewed
now at: http://www.georeferencer.org/ .

- Georeferencer is going to expose its API to open the system to third
party developers. There is a first third party tool under development:
the annotation tool from AIT (EuropeanaConnect project) which is using
Linked Data RDF will run with maps which are using Georeferencer:

Petr Pridal
