As one who is deathly afraid of heights Dawn has just described one of
my worst nightmares - hope you're feeling better soon!

We currently have a long row of map cases stacked 5 high, but the rest
only 3 high. Our ladders are spring-loaded with handrails, but I still
think of that row as a lawsuit waiting to happen (fortunately we don't
get many requests for maps in the upper drawers). When we move into our
new space in 2012 the map cases will all be stacked 3 high, mostly
because of the low ceilings. Security is another consideration - most
people can't see over the tops of anything stacked higher than 15 drawers.

Angie, Jim, Paige, All...

The bottom drawer is the problem? May I suggest a little yoga to limber
up? To me, the top drawers are the problem even though I am tall -- that
is, if you have a pile to carry and no one to help. I actually fell off
the old ladder in the map library this summer twisted my knee and lost
my toenail (I was wearing sandals). I am still recovering, and despite
calls from the campus safety department, the library has still not
replaced the ladder. The workman's comp doctor they sent me to (I could
not go to my own doctor I was surprised to find out) said they are
"crazy" not to have replaced the ladder yet. It does not meet minimum
safety standards in that ladders should have a handle you can hold as
you climb and descend. Also, our drawers are stacked 5 sets of 5 drawers
high, while I believe most are stacked 4 sets of 5 drawers high. It
might be interesting to take an informal poll:

How many drawers high do you stack your map cases? Do you have to use a
ladder to reach the higher ones? If so, does your ladder have a hand rail?

I hope others can benefit from my experience. I have been doing this
for 10 years without a problem and then... Don't think it can't happen
to you. Be careful up there! Dawn
