Colleagues,

This is to let you know that we will be holding a public briefing and
discussion on *Friday, December 3 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm EST *about two
current FGDC activities: 1) the status of the Administration's
Geospatial Platform initiative, and 2) the new OMB Circular A-16
Supplemental Guidance that was issued by OMB on November 10. The
briefing be held via web conference (WebEx and conference line
information is included below).
*
Geospatial Platform*
The President's FY 2011 Budget included guidance to develop a Geospatial
Platform that will include common geospatial data, services, and
applications; shared infrastructure; portfolio management; and a
governance framework to address the requirements of State, local and
tribal agencies. Over the past several months, the FGDC partner agencies
have developed a draft /Modernization Roadmap/ document that provides a
high-level implementation plan for the Platform. The Roadmap is
available for review and posted at
<https://owa.loc.gov/owa/UrlBlockedError.aspx>_www.geoplatform.gov_
<file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/ideloatch/Local%20Settings/Temp/notes6030C8/www.geoplatform.gov>.

There are two ways to provide feedback and comment on the Platform Roadmap:
_
On-line:_ The IdeaScale website, _http://geoplatform.ideascale.com_
<http://geoplatform.ideascale.com/>, provides an on-line venue where
stakeholders can submit ideas and comments related to the Roadmap and
the Platform. The IdeaScale site is a simple, easy-to-use tool which
allows users to provide feedback and enter into dialogues on conceptual
and specific elements of the Roadmap and the Platform. _

Via e-mail:_ You, or your organization, can submit written comments
directly to the FGDC at [log in to unmask] December 2010.

Comments and suggestions received through these processes will be used
to improve the Roadmap and refine the Geospatial Platform. The briefing
on December 3 will provide a status report on the Platform, review
opportunities for input and involvement in the development of the
Platform, and describe next steps.
*
A-16 Supplemental Guidance*
The issuance of the new Supplemental Guidance to OMB Circular A-16 is a
significant milestone in the development of the National Spatial Data
Infrastructure. Federal CIO Vivek Kundra issued the Guidance in a
memorandum to agency heads on November 10. The memorandum is posted at:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/memoranda/2011/m11-03.pdf
The Supplemental Guidance defines and clarifies selected elements of
Circular A-16 to facilitate a coordinated Federal geospatial asset
management capability that will improve support of mission-critical
business requirements of the Federal Government and its stakeholders.
The Guidance has a primary focus on geospatial data as a capital asset
and outlines a portfolio management process to manage geospatial data
assets. The portfolio management approaches laid out in the document
will help provide a foundation to support multiple objectives, including
the Geospatial Platform initiative. The briefing on December 3 will
summarize the contents of the guidance and provide an overview of the
next steps in implementation.
