Head of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)/Data Center

Rice University is seeking an enthusiastic, service-oriented,
technically savvy librarian to head our GIS/Data Center.  The successful
candidate will manage the library’s growing GIS/Data Center which
provides GIS resources and training to the Rice community.  This
position supervises 2 staff members and 1-3 student workers and reports
to the Head of the Kelley Center for Government Information and Microforms.

Responsibilities:
The Head of the GIS/Data Center is responsible for the operation and
development of the Center and supervises two staff members and 1-3
student workers. Responsibilities include assisting library customers
with the discovery and use of GIS resources and developing and offering
training in a formal class setting and an informal walk-in basis. As
part of Fondren Library's Digital Resources Steering Committee, the Head
of the GIS/Data Center participates in a variety of innovative digital
projects. As part of the Kelley Center for Government Information and
Microforms, the GIS/Data Center staff assists with Fondren's print map
collection and with geospatial information acquired through the Federal
Depository Library Program. The Head of the GIS/Data Center will work
with the local, national and international GIS communities to identify
and acquire data resources of interest to the Rice community and to
continue developing GIS skills and learning new technologies.

Requirements:
ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent graduate degree in a related area; two
years of experience working in a library or other public service
environment; aptitude for teaching and providing assistance to students,
staff and faculty with diverse levels of technical ability; strong
written and oral communication skills; ability to work independently and
provide leadership for others; ability to build and maintain a collegial
working relationship with co-workers, faculty and students; demonstrated
technical skills; familiarity with and interest in geospatial and
numeric data resources and software.

Preferred qualifications:
Experience working with GIS resources; experience working in a library
setting; public service experience; experience locating and manipulating
statistical information; interest in government information; experience
with maps in various formats; advanced resource discovery skills;
supervisory experience.

$45,000 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate with experience and
qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21 benefit days; 8 study
days; a range of retirement options including TIAA/CREF; health and life
insurance; and tuition waiver.

patent and trademark depository and a Texas state depository.
