*Digital Preservation – The Planets Way: 16-18 September 2009, Arena di
Serdica hotel, Sofia, Bulgaria*

***Apologies for cross-postings***

                                                «The challenge is to
preserve digital material
for a longer period than digital material
has actually been in existence.»
                                                                  Marc
Straat, Adobe**

As more information is created or stored digitally there is a need to
take action to preserve digital collections in the same way as there is
a need to preserve physical collections of books, journals, images,
film, audio and manuscripts. The rapid rate at which technology is
evolving and digital material is degraded presents particular challenges
about what to preserve, which features to preserve, for how long, for
what usage and how to undertake preservation activities.

Planets (Preservation and Long-term Access through NETworked Services)
will host the second in its series of five three-day training events in
Europe at the Arena di Serdica hotel, Sofia, Bulgaria, on 16-18
September 2009. ‘*Digital Preservation** – The Planets Way*’ will
consider the need to preserve digital content, the action that needs to
be taken and introduce the Planets approach to addressing these issues.

*Day 1* will present the case for preserving digital content, the
challenges of digital preservation, introduce Planets tools and services
and present the work of two institutions in Southern and Eastern Europe
that are preserving digital collections. *Days 2 and 3* will provide
practical experience of working with Planets using a scenario (sample
collection) to develop a preservation plan and preserve digital objects.

Speakers include Dr. Ross King, Austrian Research Centres, and Clive
Billenness, Programme Manager, Planets, who will discuss digital
preservation and its role in general risk management. Two case studies
including the Open Society Archives (OSA) at Central European University
will also be presented.

*Days 2* and *3* are an opportunity to meet and learn from the experts,
creators and developers of Planets. Using a sample collection, there
will be the chance to gain hands-on experience of Planets tools and
services. There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions,
network with peers and to take part in practical exercises!

You can see the full programme and register at
http://www.planets-project.eu/events/sofia-2009/

You can register for either Day 1 only at a cost of 80 EUR, or for all
three days at a cost of 175 EUR. Registration closes on *Thursday 10
September 2009*.

Due to the practical nature of much of the event there is an upper
capacity of 60 delegates on Day 1 and 40 delegates on Days 2 and 3.
