Subject: RE: EARTH as 'Book of the Year' (2009)

Francis,
Thanks for sharing the information.

We already own a copy of this remarkable atlas. It is deserving of any honour it receives. The cartography is highly detailed (on the United States maps, it shows cities and towns of very small populations. Also, it is aesthetically pleasing and very well printed. The binding is of very high quality. Most descriptions focus on the large format photographic views, several extending across a four-page spread. However, to this map librarian, the best achievement of this fine work is the cartography that comprises the bulk of the atlas.

Nearly equal to the challenge of the high price (well worth it, however) is that of finding a place to hold and display this work!

The top half-page (p.22) in the hard copy of 'The Independent' ( London), Friday 31 July 2009, 'Classified' section, carries a colo[u]r-illustrated 'puff' for this atlas from Global Mapping and Millennium House. The piece is headed 'World's biggest atlas wins ’Book of the Year’' (from 2009 Galley Club Awards announcement at Darling Harbour, Sydney). One of the 200 sales copies can be yours for only £2,400 . . .
