Subject: 1938 Geo-Referenced Imagery of Sacramento River Corridor Now
Available at Cal Atlas Web Site

Greetings,

Georeferenced mosaiced aerial photo imagery of the Sacramento River
corridor (circa 1938) is now available at the Cal Atlas (
http://www.atlas.ca.gov ) web site. This image set covers the Sacramento
River corridor from Cottonwood, Shasta County downstream to slightly
north of Knights Landing, Yolo County. It was created from aerial photos
flown by the USDA in 1937 and 1938. The general location of the imagery
is shown in attached JPG file.

Unfortunately, a small portion (approximately three miles) just north of
Butte City is not included because the original photos are missing from
our collection. If anyone knows where photos of this portion are
available for scanning, please let me know. Additional imagery of the
Sacramento River downstream to about Clarksburg may be georeferenced and
released in the future.

The imagery (in TIF format) and the zipped shape file can be located at
Cal Atlas by clicking on the “Download” icon at the Cal Atlas home page.
Drill down to the images by clicking on:

• Imagery, Base Maps, Land Cover
• Imagery
• Photos1938

The spatial extent shape file is located in the Photos1938 Cal-Atlas
Project, and the imagery is located in the Photos1938 directory.

This imagery is useful for delineating fluvial geomorphic changes over
time as well as changes in riparian habitat along the Sacramento River.
This imagery collection is particularly significant because it shows
fluvial conditions along the Sacramento River prior to the construction
of Shasta Dam .

Also, as a reminder, georeferenced imagery from 1958 for Tehama, Glenn,
and Colusa Counties are also available at Cal Atlas in the Imagery, Base
Maps, Land Cover directory (see Imagery subdirectory, then Photos1958
subdirectory, then Tehama, Glenn, or Colusa subdirectory)

If you know of other folks who would like to be notified of future
imagery releases, please let me know.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. And
again, many thanks to Monica Markel at Cal Atlas for her help in getting
this imagery posted!
