Hi Keith,

I think use of the French record is a local decision your library (the
University Library there ...) would make.

My opinion? If you use the French record you're going to have to do so
much editing that you might as well just derive/create a new original
record.

Our library has a U.S. topo map (Antigo quad., Wisconsin, 15 minute series)
that apparently has only been cataloged in French (OCLC #494412110).  Is it
necessary to create a new cataloging record for this map, so as to have and
"English" bib record, or could we just import this French language
record and
add English-language 6xx fields and other modifications?
