Well, there are seven proposals and four discussion papers before the
MARC Advisory Committee/MARBI this Midwinter. There is nothing
specifically concerning cartographic materials this time. I am providing
brief summaries of the items I think are of the most potential interest
in their order on the agenda for the meetings Saturday morning and
Sunday afternoon.

Proposal 2013-1 is a revamp of a proposal we talked about last year that
will create a new field in authority records where catalogers can record
titles affiliated with the name in the 1XX field and would allow the
information to be machine-actionable. The goal is that this will help
with authority clean up.

Discussion Paper 2013-DP04 comes from the Canadian Committee on MARC and
wants to provide a more patron friendly way to indicate the relationship
between the entity and the work, expression, manifestation, or item in
the 76X-78X fields as an option to the $4.

Discussion Paper 2013-DP02 covers adding a $q for qualifying information
to the 020, 022, 024, 027 fields so that machines can match on the
number in the $a more easily. It will add needed granularity to these
fields.

Discussion Paper 2013-DP01 provides various ways to indicate records
from national bibliographies.

Proposal 2013-03 will make repeatable field 250. This is largely to
accommodate changes in music cataloging brought about by RDA but there
may be implications for the cartographic community.

Proposal 2013-05 calls for creating field 385 to record audience
characteristics of works and expressions. This comes from the ALCTS
CaMMS Subject Analysis Committee Subcommittee on Genre/Form
Implementation since certain genre/form headings can't contain
indications of the intended audience.

Proposal 2013-07 comes from the same ALCTS CaMMS subcommittee and calls
for new codes in 046 and 648 in the bibliographic format and 046 in
authority format to record chronological categories and dates for works
and expressions that used to be contained in the genre/form heading but
now cannot.
