Subject: 1990 Census data not available from new American FactFinder

The Map-L listserve has had a string going since yesterday about 1990
Census data on the new American FactFinder. Here is my reply to that
listserve with a few changes to supply the context of the string:

The old American FactFinder that includes 1990 Census data bites the
dust in the fall of 2011, and the new American
FactFinder doesn't and won't have any 1990 data.

The Census Bureau confirmed to us this morning that this 1990 data will
only be available from the "Publications" section
of the Census website -

http://www.census.gov/prod/www/titles.html

And also from the FTP section of the Census website -

http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/DownloadDatasetServlet?_lang=en

Which means that users will have to either scan through 1990 pubs in
"Publications," or know how to do Anonymous
FTP downloading. So users have either the high-tech option of
downloading, or the low-tech option of viewing digitized
reports. But in both case users will not be able to use the AFF search
engine to search the data, which is the greatest
loss.

The Oklahoma State Data Center will be giving workshops in how to do
Anonymous FTP downloading of Census data during 2011,
but we don't have any workshop dates set yet because we need to work
with the data more before we can create a workshop
and then schedule it. We hope to bring this workshop to the fall
Depository Library Council meeting in 2011 but due to zero
state travel funding can't guarantee it.
