We have a long row of free-standing map cases stacked 25 drawers high.
Because the cases are so heavy & the bases so broad there appears to be
little if any danger of them tipping over (although I'm not about to
test that theory!). Since that row is almost 7 feet tall, my bigger
concern is people falling off of ladders when trying to get at the
highest drawers. Another safety/security-related issue is sightlines -
most people can easily see over the top of a 15 drawer map case but not
a 20 drawer map case, something to think about when arranging map cases
of varying heights.

Hi folks-

I'm new in the field of map librarianship and we are in the process of
moving part of our collection. We have map cases that stand fifteen
shelves high and others that stand 20 high. Most (but not all) of the
20-high are next to walls. I can't tell if they are attached or not,
but I think not.

The question I was asked was: is it a safety issue to have the cases 20
shleves high if they aren't near or attached to walls?

Thanks,
Rob
