**A Symposium on the Geography and Cartography of the Civil War**

The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library extends
a cordial invitation to history buffs, collectors, teachers, and
scholars interested in the history of the American Civil War and the
19^th century mapping of the United States to attend a one-day
symposium, September 21, 2011. The symposium is part of the public
outreach programs supporting the Boston Public Library’s commemoration
of the Civil War, including the map-driven exhibition, /Torn in Two:
150^th Anniversary of the Civil War. /**

Four authors who contributed essays to the exhibition catalog will be
participating in the symposium. They will examine various aspects of how
the American nation was almost “torn in two.” Although each author will
focus on only one aspect of the story, together they provide a variety
of geographic and cartographic perspectives for understanding one of the
most important chapters in our nation’s history. There will be time for
questions and answers following each presentation.

Debra Newman Ham, Ph. D. (History Department, Morgan State University),
“//‘Thenceforward and Forever Free,’ A Brief Overview of the Quest for
Emancipation in the United States.”//

Susan Schulten, Ph. D. (History Department, University of Denver),
“//Mapping the Sectional Crisis: Cotton, Slavery, and the Strength of
the Rebellion.”////

Richard F. Miller, J. D. (Author of /Harvard’s Civil War: A History of
the Twentieth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry/, 2005), “//The Battle of
Balls Bluff: Would Terrain Maps Have Made a Difference?”////

Ronald Grim, Ph. D. (Curator of Maps, Norman B. Leventhal Map Center),
“//Remembering the War through Maps: Creating the Gettysburg Post-Battle
Maps.”////

The symposium will be held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Rabb
Auditorium on the Concourse Level of the Boston Public Library at Copley
Square. A reception and gallery tour of the exhibition will also be
provided following the symposium. There is no registration fee. Please
RSVP to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

/Torn in Two/, a multimedia exhibition takes a geographic and
cartographic approach to exploring and illuminating the causes of the
conflict, the conduct of the war and how the war was remembered in later
years. It showcases 50 historic maps interwoven with 40 other items from
the Boston Pubic Library’s special collections, including Mathew Brady
photographs, a Winslow Homer painting, prints, diaries, Currier & Ives
political cartoons, music and press of the period, all from the Boston
Public Library's special collections. A fully illustrated, 152-page
exhibition catalog is available for US $35.00; for information about
purchasing a copy, send inquiries to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
