For mapping layers I suggest looking at www.Openstreetmap.org, or slightly easier, there is a data download by country or region of the OSM data from here:-

For the imagery I find this portal for the USGS data to be very good:-

We have a graduate student who is looking for high resolution imagery of the  Ashanti Region in Ghana. Any other base mapping layers, including streets, roads and buildings of that area would also be helpful.  Any information on how to get our hands on the imagery would be most helpful.
