Happy New Year to All!

The University of Alberta Libraries is hosting its seventh Winter Institute
on Statistical Literacy for Librarians
(WISLL)<http://wisll.library.ualberta.ca/> from
February 20-22, 2013. This training event will provide strategies and
skills for finding, evaluating, and retrieving published statistics and
will be useful to information professionals working in academic, public,
and special libraries. Instruction will focus on making online statistics
more accessible to librarians and their patrons.

*Only 7 spots remain, and will be filled on a first-come, first-served
basis!*

Topics to be covered include:

- A framework for thinking about published statistics
- How statistics are derived from data
- The importance of definitions, standards, and classifications in
understanding statistics
- Using metadata to find statistics
- Interpreting statistical metadata
- Evaluating statistical sources
- Choosing official and non-official statistical sources
- Tools and strategies for locating statistics
- How to cite online statistics
- Geographical and spatial representations of statistics
- Challenges in finding statistics for small geographic areas

Please note that this workshop will *NOT* provide instruction on conducting
data analysis or library assessments, although some examples will include
the use of data to demonstrate how statistics are produced.

The registration fee is $250.00, which includes continental breakfast,
coffee breaks, and lunch for all three days.

Enrollment is limited to 30 registrants. To hold a place, we ask people to
pay their registration fee within two weeks of completing the online
registration form.

Registration is currently open. For more information, or to register,
